Choosing a prop firm in 2026: payout reliability beats profit split
By Eddie Editor · Jul 2, 2026 · Updated Jul 27, 2026
A 90% split means nothing if payouts stall. How to read payout statistics, consistency rules and terms-of-service churn before buying a challenge.
Prop-firm marketing leads with profit splits and account sizes, but the number that should drive your decision is payout reliability: what percentage of requested payouts are approved, and how fast.
Payout statistics beat promises
The better firms now publish payout data — approval rates, average processing time, total paid. Treat firms that publish nothing as unproven. On BrokerBase profiles you will find community-reported processing times in reviews and our complaint statistics for every firm.
Read the consistency rule twice
Consistency rules — limits on how much of your profit can come from a single day — are where most surprise denials happen. A firm that changes its consistency rule mid-stream is shifting the goalposts on traders who already paid.
The drawdown clock matters more than the number
A 5% daily drawdown measured from balance is very different from one measured from equity including floating profit. Firms that document their balance-based calculation clearly deserve credit; many bury this in Discord answers instead.
Terms-of-service churn is a risk signal
Every prop profile on BrokerBase tracks when we last verified the firm’s terms. Frequent quiet amendments — especially to payout and breach clauses — correlate strongly with the complaint spikes we see in our mediation data.
